Additional Information on Category 3 Applications for the CRC Exam

Candidates interested in applying under Category 3 must have received a master’s or doctoral degree in one of the fields of study below and must complete a pre-review application form:

Category 3 approved degrees are:

• Addictions/Substance Abuse Counseling
• Counseling Psychology
• School/Guidance Counseling
• Marriage and Family Counseling/Therapy
• Mental Health Counseling
• Social Work
• Counselor Education & Supervision-Doctoral Degree
  • Counselor Education & Supervision with course content that emphasizes rehabilitation, disability counseling

Graduates must submit evidence of having taken or taught courses that include the following body of knowledge  and must submit acceptable employment experience as defined by CRCC (see Section 5 in the CRC Certification Guide):

• Counseling Theories, Techniques of Counseling & Evidence Based Practices
• Group & Family Counseling
• Crisis & Trauma & Interventions
• Medical & Psychosocial Aspects of Chronic Illness and Disabilities
• Assessment/Evaluation, Occupational Analysis and Service Implementation
• Career Development & Job Placement
• Business Engagement
• Community Resources & Partnerships
• Case Management
• Healthcare & Disability Management
• Research, Methodology, & Performance Management

Internships and practicum courses may not be used as evidence, and or in lieu of completing or teaching the foundational disability courses.

PRE-REVIEW

All candidates must complete the Pre-Review process prior to submitting an application and meet all requirements to be approved for Category 3 eligibility. The pre-review includes an evaluation of the candidate’s official college transcript as well as work experience; identification of any gaps noted based on the CRC knowledge domain areas; recommendations on how to bridge coursework and experience needed to meet the eligibility requirements; and information about the next steps to submit the CRC application.
